WICHITA, Ks—[November 19, 2008] The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today recognized Spurrier Chemical Companies Inc. as a “Champion” under the Safer Detergents Stewardship Initiative (SDSI) of the Design for the Environment (DfE) program.
The EPA recognized Spurrier Chemical Companies Inc during a SDSI awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. Spurrier Chemical Companies Inc. was one of 33 chemical manufactures and product formulators nationwide recognized as having met the SDSI standard. Champion status is the highest level of recognition offered under SDSI.
The SDSI recognizes environmental leaders who voluntarily commit to the use of safer surfactants. Safer surfactants are surfactants that break down quickly to non-polluting compounds and help protect aquatic life in both fresh and salt water. Nonylphenol ethoxylates, commonly referred to as NPEs, are an example of a surfactant class that does not meet the definition of a safer surfactant. Spurrier replaced the nonylphenol ethoxylates in all of their cleaning products.
